Within IceSafari, the tight collaboration between INCAS and UBFF supports young researchers in their studies for their thesis. Two students shared their experiences regarding what they studied, how they chose their bachelor’s topic and what it’s like to study at the master’s in Environmental Physics and Ecological Polymers.

I opted for the FMPE Master last summer after graduating from the Faculty of Physics with a bachelor’s thesis that opened my eyes to a more complex perspective related to what I want to do further in my career and strengthened my passion for Atmospheric Physics.

The BA thesis was entitled Quantification of NO2 Concentrations Sampled Using the Differential Absorption Optical Spectroscopy Technique in the City of Măgurele. I wanted to observe the efficiency of a Max-DOAS equipment with that of a DOAS telescope and measure the concentrations of N from the town of Măgurele where I noticed that the pollution is the highest around 4-5 PM. At the beginning of the fourth year, I was very confused about what to do for my thesis, but I received a lot of help from Dr. Andreea Calcan and from prof. Mihai Dima regarding what to choose as a BA topic, materials, and I received help analyzing a very valuable data set.

Now I work at National Meteorological Administration in the Atmospheric Physics and Air Quality Observatory laboratory. Here I carry out radio soundings and launch meteorological balloons and measure air humidity, temperature, wind direction and speed, and then I deal with data quality, highlighting types of clouds per day and the elaboration of STUWE thermodynamic diagrams.

During the master’s degree, I enjoyed the Climatic System course taught by the professor Mihai Dima. In the future I would also like to work on climate change simulations and program as much as possible.

The purpose of my BA thesis Comparative evaluation of the major atmospheric pollutants monitored by standardized and non-standardized methods, carried out in collaboration with INCAS under the guidance of Dr. Andreea Calcan, prof. Dima and last but not least prof. Gabriela Iorga, was to makes a study as succinct, easy to understand and at the same time complete, about atmospheric pollutants and their monitoring methods.

In the introductory part of the paper, I was instructed to search in specialized manuals about the atmosphere, pollutants, I analyzed data that would express the importance of this subject for the environment and man. In the second part of my first research, I studied about air quality monitoring equipment and methodology, from which I found out how complex they are and what they represent. At the end, I carried out a case study based on the data collected regarding the air quality in Prahova county, where I received considerable help by being guided to use important data and the representation of these data on graphs in order to be able to compare and to follow the state of the air in the respective area and be able to draw the correct conclusions.
