NOROs – Winter School on Cloud Microphysics:

From measurements to modelling

The NOrwegian-ROmanian (NOROs) Winter School is now open for students to apply. It is set to take place in Bucharest, ROMANIA, between January 16th and 19th, 2024. The school will be hosted at the National Institute for Aerospace Research “Ellie Carafoli”.

As a jointly organized school between two ongoing (IceSAFARI and BRACE-MY) EU-funded projects revolving around cloud microphysics, the school will be focused on the key aspects of clouds in the climate system. The lectures will walk students through the initial steps of cloud formation, including the particles that they form on, to their observation, from in situ to remote sensing, and finally to their representation in Earth System Models and impact on the climate. To maximize the applicability of the material covered in the lectures, there will be several practicals where students will get hands-on experience conducting measurements and analyzing data. The lectures will be led by Heike Wex (TROPOS), Sara M. Blichner (Stockholm University), Trude Storelvmo (University of Oslo), Gabriela Iorga (University of Bucharest), Sorin Vâjâiac (INCAS) and Robert O. David (University of Oslo).  The official lecture schedule will be released in early 2024.

In order to apply, please send a brief description of your educational background, current knowledge on and general research interest in clouds to Robert David (r.o.david@geo.uio.no) or Gabriela Iorga (gabriela.iorga@g.unibuc.ro) by January 5th.

If you plan on attending from outside of Romania there is the possibility to obtain financial support for travel and accommodation. Therefore, please include that information in your application brief application description. For students (outside Romania) wishing to obtain ECTS credit for the course, please, keep in mind that two credit points will be obtainable by attending the course, conducting further data analysis and presenting (oral and written) their results to the course organizers and the course attendees in early March.
