My experience at NOROs WS can be summed up in three words: curiosity, knowledge, novelty. During the four days we learned what teamwork means and how important it is to get the most accurate results in order to make predictions for the future. The interactive activities had an important role in understanding the phenomena. Data modeling in Python brought additional knowledge. I also understood how the equipment is performing and how it is useful for the field of environmental physics or, more precisely, cloud microphysics. I think more Romanian data could be included for a deeper analysis in modelling. This joint project between Romania and Norway created for these four days a communion between all the people who participated and certainly, opened the doors to future collaborations. I’m glad that I was part of this pleasant and useful experience! (Andra, Master student)

The NOROs Winter School was one of the most beautiful moments of my master’s program. The Master in Environmental Physics and Ecological Polymers is an extraordinary opportunity to assimilate and put into practice various knowledge in the field of environmental sciences. Application to participate in the NOROs WS was a decision facilitated by attending one of the courses of this master’s program, the one about Solar Radiation and the Earth’s Radiation Balance, under the direction of Prof. Gabriela Iorga, the project supervisor. The 4 days of study, the exchange of experience and practical activities with the Norwegian teachers and colleagues were an experience that I would like to go through every day. Didactic activities, presentations and introduction to the theoretical part of the concepts used in the study of cloud microphysics, the formation of condensation nuclei and aerosols were complemented by practical activities and laboratory work to facilitate their understanding and visualization by students. As extracurricular activities, I spent a lot of time with my foreign colleagues, even outside of school hours; I presented them with some of the tourist attractions of the city of Bucharest together with the traditional Romanian gastronomy. I thank everyone for all the effort put into organizing and running this project, colleagues, teachers and organizers. (Marilena, Master student)

I attended the “NOROS Winter School on Cloud microphysics: from measurements to modeling” courses from January 16-19, 2024. On the first day, Prof. Heike Wex presented us about aerosols and how cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) / ice nuclei (INPs) form. Together with Dr. Robert Oscar David, we had a practical work, to observe and understand how a cloud is formed, to calculate the concentration of INPs and let’s see how this varies depending on the temperature. What I liked most was the visit to INCAS Strejnicu, from the second day, where we were presented the research equipment (ceilometer, cloud radar, cloud camera, radiometer, etc.). As a doctoral student, I was interested in all this equipment and I was very attentive when measurements were taken and interpreted. On the third day, Dr. Sara Blichner presented us with an Introduction to modeling aerosols, and Prof. Trude Storelvmo an Introduction to cloud modeling, where I listened with great interest, having a direct connection with the topic of my doctoral thesis, regarding the study of the characteristics microphysics and macrophysics of clouds. On the last day, together with Dr. Sorin Vajaiac, we had a practical test using SODA-2 Data Processing Software. Prof. Gabriela Iorga presented then the status of current research in the field for Romania. I was deeply impressed by the professionalism and involvement of all the teachers, by the way of interactive presentation and by everyone’s understanding. The classes took place in a relaxed and very productive atmosphere. I didn’t feel for a moment that I was in a class, but on a journey of knowledge and deepening. I found wonderful, competent people, who happily donate their knowledge and experience. Such meetings would be very useful in the future. Thank you very much for this beautiful experience! (Liliana, PhD student)

This experience by NOROs has opened my mind to new approaches in the field of atmospheric science. While I was familiar with a few notions about aerosols before, participating in this winter school has provided me with an enhanced perspective on the subject. I found it incredibly useful, especially as I am currently searching for a PhD position. The insights gained from this winter school have broadened my horizon and deepened my understanding of atmospheric science. (Andreea, Master student)
